The Evil Twin
Where there is love, there is always grief
The two roam this earth hand in hand,
Like opposites of each other, they attract one another
The most powerful pair in the land.
You can’t have love without knowing grief
It’s carved in stone somewhere,
So heed this warning before you leap
Get snarled in their trap if you dare.
If you never love, you’ll never grieve
Your heart is barren and cold,
So you say to yourself, “Just what’s the deal?
I’m damned if I do, I'm damned if I don’t.”
It’s a catch-22, a double-edged sword
There’s no way you can win,
But if you roll the dice, you know the score
Right up until the bitter end.
Love can be the bliss you seek
All things happy and bright,
Then along comes grief to break your knees
Sending you naked into the cold, dark night.
Why do you think it’s called “falling” in love?
Look it up – to fall is bad,
You’ve either stumbled, been pushed or shoved
Forfeiting the upright position you had.
Perhaps you’re a gambler intrigued by risk
So your heartstrings you release,
Foolish you, your own grave that you dig
For love will slice you into so many pieces.
It’s up to you, the choice is yours
Will you accept love and its evil twin?
Or do you turn away, rejecting the games that it plays
And find what you need from within.
